The Hate U Give

Starr Carter witnesses her childhood best friend Khalil get shot and killed at the hands of a police officer. He was innocent, but that doesn’t stop the press and public from making judgments and guesses about his intentions. This book is her story.

Saying that this is an important book is an understatement. Everyone who lives in an urban area knows that this “story” is based on hundreds or even thousands of similar real life murders each year in the United States. This violence goes on every single day and although we hem and haw at the news nothing is changing. The story isn’t at all preachy even though my commentary is. 🙂

I think this would be an excellent part of any teenagers social justice education. I would warn that there is blatant racism (obviously) violence and sex so you should pre-read it before handing it off to under 16-year-olds.

To say that you’ll be affected by this book is an understatement and the terrible, horrible part for me is that although it isn’t a true story- it is a real thing.

I purchased this book to review it here and for our personal library.
