An Urban atmosphere novel for the win. Kat lives in New York City, and I loved the descriptions of the surroundings as much as the storyline. The description of Trick or Treating in an apartment building is spot on correct. Why do people put the pumpkin on their door if they aren’t going to answer it? That is a pet peeve of mine.
Kat’s parents are divorced, and she lives with her Mom who likes to clean. She’s always liked things clean, but lately, things have gotten out of hand. Along with all the troubles that go along with middle school Kat has to figure out who to ask for help. Should she tell her Dad or someone at school?
I enjoyed the side plot of Kat’s Harriet the Spy school project as that was one of my favorite books growing up. Melissa also does a great job showing kids that they can tackle difficult life situations. Kat has such a positive outlook and is so kind and caring with her friends and family she is an excellent role model.
