ReThinking School

All long-time homeschoolers will tell you that we’ve heard all the theories about our school system, how and why we divide children into grades and why we have a short academic year compared to the rest of the world. I had a feeling though that much of this book is not common knowledge in most public school circles. I pulled my oldest boys out of school in 2001, so I expected that reading this book about the system we opted out of would be a review.

That said, I reached page 7 note 2:

“As my own experience should show if you happen to be homeschooling, you’re still not off the hook. The majority of home educators I’ve come in contact with are still a long way from questioning the system. Keep Reading.”

Now she had my attention.

For homeschoolers: There is plenty of material pulled from the WTM forums and Susan’s other books. It is with a different spin as her audience with this book is a broader segment of the population. In my own experience as a teacher, I’ve found that sometimes you need to hear the same information several ways before you internalize it. Many of us stubbornly stick with grade level packages even though they aren’t working with our kids.

For school parents: This book isn’t going just to tell you homeschooling is best. Susan lays out the facts with no bias and admits to her own homeschooling mistakes. There are tons of resources in the appendix to help you figure out the best educational route for your child.

Verdict- Buy

Please note that I borrowed this book from my library and chose to post a review. Apart from that, I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
